Hair + Skin Care for Dancers: What to Do Daily vs. After a Competition
Dancers train like athletes—but sweat, stage makeup, and tight hairstyles create extra stress on skin and hair. A simple routine (done consistently) helps prevent clogged pores, irritation, scalp buildup, breakage, and tension headaches.
Morning (before class, school, rehearsal)
1) Cleanse (or rinse if you’re dry/sensitive).
Use a gentle foaming cleanser to remove overnight oil and prep skin.
- Foaming cleansers with salicylic acid can help unclog pores and reduce acne-causing bacteria.
CeraVe Facial Foaming Cleanser
Cetaphil Facial Foaming Cleanser
2) Moisturize.
Look for hyaluronic acid to keep skin hydrated and comfortable under makeup.
CeraVe Moisturizer
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Moisturizer
3) Sunscreen (every morning).
Stage lighting + screens still add up. Wear a mineral Sunscreens with spf 30 or higher.
EltaMD
La Roche-Posay Anthelios
During the day (between rehearsals / classes)
4) Quick skin reset (no full wash needed).
If you’re sweaty and can’t wash your face, use:
Anya & Aidin Daily Peel Pads (help lift sweat/oil buildup; use gently and don’t overdo it if you’re sensitive).
For a makeup-safe refresh that helps reduce bacteria:
Hypochlorous Acid Spray
*Tip:Pat sweat with a clean towel instead of rubbing—rubbing can push sweat/makeup deeper into pores.
After class (end of day)
5) Remove makeup fully (especially performance makeup).
If you wear heavy or waterproof makeup, do a two-step cleanse:
- Step 1: makeup remover/micellar water/oil cleanser (to break down makeup and sunscreen)
- Step 2: your foaming cleanser (to clean sweat + residue)
6) Moisturize again.
Rehydrate skin after cleansing and sweating.
Hyaluronic Peptide Serum Deep hydration that plumps and firms, especially dry skin.
Hair: Daily habits that prevent breakage + scalp issues
7) Protect hair during tight styles.
Avoid pulling the same spot tight every day (rotate part placement and bun position when possible).
Use gel sparingly and avoid heavy buildup at the hairline.
Choose snag-free elastics and smooth pins.
8) Wash when you’ve sweat a lot (as needed).
Going too long after sweaty classes can cause itching, dandruff, scalp acne, and buildup.
Use sulfate-free, paraben-free shampoo
Follow with a moisturizing conditioner
Optional: 2–3 drops of hair oil* on damp ends
Dry hair completely (especially before bed) to reduce flaky scalp
What to Do After a Competition (or Show Day)
As soon as you can (same day)
1) Take hair down ASAP.
The longer a tight bun stays in, the more tension and breakage you risk.
2) Remove stage makeup thoroughly.
Competition makeup is heavier and more occlusive—don’t sleep in it.
Do a double cleanse (remove makeup → cleanse skin)
Pay attention to: hairline, jawline, neck, behind ears (common breakout zones)
3) Calm + hydrate.
Moisturize well after cleansing.
If your skin feels irritated, keep the routine simple (cleanser + moisturizer; exfoliating pads only if your skin tolerates them).
4) Optional refresh between events (if you’re in full makeup).
Hypochlorous acid spray can help you feel clean without disturbing makeup.
Hair + scalp “reset” after competition
5) Shampoo to remove sweat + product buildup.
Stage days often include gel, hairspray, powder, and repeated touch-ups—wash those out.
6) Condition and detangle gently.
Detangle with conditioner in, starting at ends and working up.
Avoid ripping out pins/elastics—remove slowly to prevent snapping.
7) Post-style relief.
If your scalp is tender from tight styling, keep hair loose the rest of the night.
If you’re prone to breakage, consider a simple leave-in conditioner on ends.
Quick recap
Daily: cleanse → moisturize → sunscreen; refresh between sessions; remove makeup fully at night; wash hair when sweaty; avoid repeated tight tension in the same spots.
After competition: take hair down, double cleanse to remove stage makeup, moisturize, then wash/condition hair to remove product buildup and reduce scalp irritation.
